Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to buy a long gun (rifle, shotgun, etc.)?

You will need a NYS driver’s license, and there will be additional forms that will be filled out, including a background check. If you wish to buy a semi-automatic, you will need to obtain an endorsement. In Ulster County, it should be obtained from Ulster County Pistol Permit Bureau. You can find out more about the new laws that went into effect in August 2022 here.

Do I need a license to buy a handgun?

Yes, you do. Every county in New York State has its own requirements, so be sure to check with your county to find out about the application process. You will need to apply for a handgun permit, with two types of permits - carry permit and premises. Prior to applying, you may need to take a training course, to learn firearms safety and other important topics. See this link for updates to the gun laws that went into effect in August 2022.

What about the NYS handgun registration?

You will also need to register and certify ownership of your guns with New York State, which needs to be renewed. Check out the NYS website for details on this very important step and requirement.

Where do I go hunting in New York State?

There are thousands of acres of state owned land that is available for hunting. You do need a hunting license in New York State, and you may need a permit to hunt in specific areas of New York. You can check with the local offices of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on how and where to access.

What are the fishing regulations for New York and where can I fish?

Fishing requires a license from NYS, which can be for the day, annually and can be purchased for lifetime. You can get a list of fishing areas that are available here. Fishing access is available at New York City reservoirs (including the beautiful Ashokan right nearby our shop), although a permit is required from NYC Water Shed to access the land and to store a boat on their property.

What happens if I inherit a gun?

In New York State, if the gun was included as an inheritance, the estate has 15 days to give it to a licensed person before incurring any liability. If the person who is inheriting the gun does not have a license, the gun should be disposed of immediately or stored by an FFL licensed dealer or local police. Contact your local pistol permit authority, police department or your attorney for additional details on how the Safe Act for NYS impacted gun inheritance laws.

If you are the owner of the firearm, the best course of action is to ensure that the person who is inheriting the gun has a gun permit.
